Credit, Grades & Transcripts

Credits

The academic credits you’ll earn at Cornell can generally be applied toward an undergraduate degree at Cornell or another school, at that institution’s discretion.

If you have any questions about their transferability, please check with the school or the specific Cornell college you’re thinking of attending.

Credit limits

Credit limits are determined by term.

Summer Session

  • Up to four credits in a three-week period (effectively a 20-credit semester)
  • Up to eight credits in a six-week period (a 20-credit semester)
  • Up to ten credits in an eight-week period (a 19-credit semester equivalent)

Winter Session

  • One class or up to four credits

Note: Unless otherwise stated, all precollege classes are regular, credit-bearing Cornell undergraduate classes and must be taken for credit and letter grade only. There is no audit option.

Grades

Precollege students receive letter grades only. You may not take courses on a pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.

How do I access my grades?

Your final grade(s) will be available approximately 10 days after the end of your class. To view your grade, log in to your Student Center and click on “Grades” under Academic History. (NetID required.)

Grades cannot be given over the telephone, email, or fax. In addition, your grades are confidential information, and we will not share them with your high school.

Transcripts

After attending a Cornell precollege program, your enrollment in courses, your grades, and the number of credits you earned will be recorded on an official Cornell University transcript and will be a part of your permanent and complete academic record at the university.

Can a bad grade be removed from my transcript?

Bad grades cannot be deleted from transcripts. If you come to Cornell, the class(es) you take will always remain on your transcript and will factor into your cumulative GPA.

How do I order my transcript?

Approximately 10 days after the end of your class, you may log in to your Cornell Student Center to view and print an unofficial transcript or request an official transcript from the Cornell University Registrar website ($10 per copy).

For information, visit the Office of the University Registrar.

A word to parents/guardians

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords students certain rights with respect to their education records. Further details may be found in Cornell Policy 4.5 Access to Student Information (https://policy.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/vol4_5.pdf).

In general, FERPA grants students the right to provide written consent before the university discloses personally identifiable information from the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure of personally identifiable information without consent. You can read more about the FERPA exceptions here (https://catalog.cornell.edu/policies-disclosures/ferpa-notification/). Specifically, FERPA permits disclosure of personally identifiable information to parents or legal guardians of dependent students as that term is defined in the Internal Revenue Code. In general, the university does not make education records available to the parents of a student. However, where the university believes that it is in a dependent student’s best interest, information from the student’s education records may, at the university’s discretion, be released to the parents or legal guardians of such a dependent student.

Unless otherwise indicated in writing by the student at the time of course registration, or thereafter, the university will presume that a student participant in the Cornell University Precollege Studies Program is a dependent as that term is defined in the Internal Revenue Code. Students who are not financially dependent and do not wish to permit their parents or legal guardians access to their education records should advise the School of Continuing Education in writing and provide evidence of financial independence. For the purposes of the Cornell University Precollege Studies Program, staff from the School of Continuing Education withhold the right to disclose any and all information to students’ parents or legal guardians regarding their education record, including but not limited to grades, class attendance/participation, issues of academic integrity, petitions or withdrawals, any violations of this Code of Conduct, and any information related to physical or mental health wellbeing.
